About

About

The intersections of live performance and technology are increasingly apparent while becoming steadily more seamless or even invisible. The techne-tools repository is about building tools that advance human–computer interaction and collaboration in a performance research context.

As technical artists in live theatre, we believe that — with ethical action and clear theoretical grounding — artists can be empowered by the rapid prototyping and conceptual exploration allowed by machine learning, creative code, and design-led performance practice. The tools being built here are means to that end.

What we are

A practice-as-research project. The work moves between the studio, the bench, and the stage; the tools are made to be used in that loop, not demonstrated from a distance.

What we hold to

  • Grounding. Every tool starts from a stated question in performance practice, not from the technology’s novelty.
  • Ethics. Care for performers, collaborators, and audiences is structural — in how the tool is made, documented, and taught.
  • Legibility. The work should be readable and reproducible by other artists and researchers.
  • Openness. Tools are shared so they can be examined, adapted, and contested.

How it is made

Machine learning, creative code, and design-led performance practice, developed in live theatre contexts and documented openly in the repository.
